Plans are underway to save Accra's Waste Crisis-Ahmed Ibrahim

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has admitted that Accra has run out of land for waste disposal, revealing that garbage from the capital will now have to be hauled to the Central and Eastern Regions for recycling.

Speaking during a visit to the reopened Achimota Abofu Transfer Station on June 26, 2026, the Minister announced a tripartite partnership between the government, the Jospong Group, and tricycle "aboboyaa" operators to rescue the city's collapsing sanitation system.

"There is no land in Accra here either you go to Central Region, or you go to Eastern Region," Ibrahim stated.

Adding that the Achimota facility, established in 2015 under former President John Dramani Mahama, had ceased operations due to an unsustainable cost structure. "Mahama brought it. Mahama is back and Mahama must fix it," he said.

The Minister's intervention follows recent floods that inundated landfill sites, preventing nearly 3,000 tricycle operators from disposing of refuse. The government now plans to subsidize dumping fees to discourage illegal disposal.
