Amb. Mike Oquaye Jnr, has accused the government of failing to deliver on promises made to Ghanaians to tackle illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Speaking on TV3’s The Key Points, Amb. Oquaye Jnr. said the government had made several commitments to address illegal mining but questioned the progress made since assuming office.
He expressed concern over the continued expansion of illegal mining activities, particularly along river bodies, saying the development raises questions about the effectiveness of measures being implemented to combat the menace.
Amb.Oquaye Jnr. also questioned the continued reliance on the seizure and destruction of mining equipment, arguing that authorities should focus on addressing the sources of illegal mining rather than dealing only with the equipment used.
He further called for greater accountability in the fight against galamsey, saying the government must deliver results in protecting Ghana’s water bodies.
Amb Oquaye Jnr.urged political actors to avoid deliberate sabotage in the fight against illegal mining, stressing that protecting Ghana’s water resources should be treated as a national responsibility rather than a partisan issue.
