The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has called on young journalists to prioritise truth, verification and credibility as journalism continues to evolve in the digital age.
The call was made during the 77th anniversary celebration of the GJA, held at the British Council in Accra under the theme “Building on Our Legacy, Advancing Ethical Journalism and Shaping the future of Digital Media.”
Speaking at the ceremony, Vice President of the asscociation Madam Rebecca Ekpe described journalism not simply as a profession, but as a public trust that requires journalists to serve society with truth, accuracy and accountability.
According to her, journalism should not be about who publishes first, but about who publishes the truth. She therefore admonished young journalists to build their careers around credibility while defending press freedom and remaining accountable for the information they put before the public.
Adding that, journalism must go beyond simply reporting Ghana’s history and instead strive to write the country’s history honestly.
She further highlighted the transformation of newsrooms from the use of typewriters to mobile phones and now Artificial Intelligence (AI), noting that technological advancement must not compromise the fundamental values of journalism. She cautioned journalists against sacrificing truth for competition and urged young journalists not to chase virality at the expense of verification.
