Brighton and Hove Albion made a sensational start to the 2026/27 English Premier League season after crushing Aston Villa 4-0 at the Amex Stadium on Sunday.
The Seagulls took control almost immediately, going ahead in the eighth minute through a Victor Lindelöf own goal before Maxim De Cuyper doubled the advantage in the 18th minute. Brighton continued to overwhelm the visitors with their high-energy attacking play as Jack Hinshelwood struck twice in quick succession to make it 4-0 inside the opening 31 minutes.
Villa’s miserable afternoon became even worse when summer signing João Gomes was shown a red card before half-time after kicking out at Brighton forward Georginio Rutter. The dismissal left Unai Emery’s side with 10 men and effectively ended any realistic hopes of mounting a comeback.
Brighton managed the second half professionally, protecting their comfortable advantage and denying Villa any opportunity to restore pride. Hinshelwood was one of the standout performers after scoring twice, while Brighton’s intensity and organisation exposed a Villa team struggling to settle following major changes to its squad during the summer.
For Aston Villa, the defeat represents a disastrous beginning to a season in which expectations remain high following their fourth-place Premier League finish and Europa League triumph last term. The departures of several influential players during the summer have created a period of transition, and the heavy loss at Brighton highlighted the scale of the rebuilding task facing Emery.
Brighton, however, could hardly have asked for a better opening statement. Four goals, a clean sheet and a commanding home performance have given the Seagulls an early confidence boost and sent a warning to the rest of the Premier League that they intend to be more than spectators in the 2026/27 campaign.
