AshantiGold Sporting Club Limited has taken a fresh legal step towards a possible return to Ghanaian football, with the club’s lawyers asking the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to review its long-standing suspension following what they describe as a fundamental change in the club’s ownership and governance structure.
In a letter dated 17th August 2026, lawyers representing AshantiGold Sporting Club Limited formally wrote to the General Secretary of the GFA, Prosper Harrison Addo, requesting copies of documents relating to the club’s suspension.
The letter, issued by Lexbridge Legal PRUC and signed by Enoch Anhwere Afoakwah, Esq, who happens to be the Counsel for AshantiGold Sporting Club Limited, focuses on the circumstances surrounding the club’s suspension and the subsequent decision by the GFA Congress to maintain it.
According to the letter, the club was suspended following a GFA Executive Council decision on 29 September 2022 under Article 17(1). The matter was subsequently considered at the '29th Ordinary Congress held at KNUST on 10 July 2023', where the suspension was maintained.
However, AshantiGold now argues that circumstances surrounding the club have materially changed.
Ownership and governance change.
The most significant development highlighted in the letter is the club’s claim that there has been a fundamental change in its beneficial ownership, voting control and governance structure.
The correspondence identifies 'Odeneho Kofi Appianin Ennin' as the beneficial owner of the club and indicates that the new ownership structure is seeking to engage the GFA over the club’s suspended status.
The lawyers are therefore seeking the relevant documentation from the GFA as part of efforts to make an application to the 'GFA Executive Council' for the lifting of the suspension
If it goes successful, the move could potentially pave the way for the historic Obuasi-based club to seek a return to the mainstream Ghanaian football structure.
A potential new chapter for AshantiGold
AshantiGold, one of Ghana’s most recognisable football clubs, has a rich history in the domestic game and has enjoyed significant success over the years.
